Medical Assistance In Dying (NL)

On June 17, 2016, the Parliament of Canada passed bill C-14 which allows eligible Canadian adults to request medical assistance in dying (MAiD). The passage of the bill was the culmination of an ongoing debate on the right of people to control the time and circumstances of their own death.

This online CPD/CME module will outline the Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD) process as it currently stands in Newfoundland and Labrador as part of the spectrum of end of life options. It provides learners with a comprehensive understanding of the legal and practical aspects of medical assistance in dying (MAiD).

Learning Objectives

After completing this online learning module, you will be able to:

1. Summarize the background and legal context that has led to the legal changes allowing medical assistance in dying (MAiD)
2. Describe the MAiD process in Newfoundland and Labrador
3. Outline how to determine if a person meets the eligibility and assessment criteria for Track 1 (natural death is reasonably foreseeable) or Track 2 (not reasonably foreseeable)
4. Recognize the community of practice and supports available to assist with assessment and provision of MAiD
5. Discuss future considerations with respect to MAiD implementation
