Blood Transfusion: Adverse Transfusion Reactions (ATRs)

An adverse transfusion reaction (ATR) is an undesirable and unintended physiological response during or after the administration of blood components or plasma derived blood products. It is important for those involved in the transfusion to be capable of early recognition that a reaction may be occurring and proper intervention and management of the reaction.

This module will focus on the various types of ATRs, including the signs, symptoms and treatments. The actions required when an ATR is occurring will also be examined, including notification and reporting.

After completing this module, you will be able to:

1. Define an adverse transfusion reaction (ATR)
2. Identify various types of ATR based on the signs and symptoms and time of occurrence.
3. Identify the reporting framework and process of investigation of ATRs.
4. Identify the steps to treat and manage each specific ATR.
5. Determine which transfusion reactions can be resumed once treated.
